Federal prosecutors have charged 50 individuals in Minnesota with alleged voter fraud, focusing on non-citizens participating in elections. This marks a significant step by the Department of Justice (DOJ), as Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter detailed in an appearance on ‘Saturday in America.’ The DOJ continues its legal pursuits, appealing a Florida judge’s ruling deeming a federal law on non-citizen voting unconstitutional.
In a separate issue, the Trump administration faces a lawsuit over its actions to gather and analyze voter data nationwide. Filed in Washington, D.C., by the League of Women Voters and other organizations, the complaint argues that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has unlawfully acquired voter files from at least 47 states. The lawsuit claims DHS combined this information with commercial datasets, violating federal privacy protections.
The administration has stressed that non-citizen voting threatens election integrity, though incidences of such cases remain scarce. Despite this, the Trump administration has expanded federal involvement in election management, typically a state-controlled domain.
Efforts to obtain voter information from states have met resistance, with federal courts blocking several attempts. The latest legal challenge requests the court to declare this federal data collection illegal and demand DHS delete acquired voter information.
With Election Day approaching, pressures on states to remove non-citizens from their rolls have heightened. A lawsuit filed against California election officials reflects this, with federal authorities pushing for confirmation of voter eligibility within tight deadlines. The California secretary of state expressed concerns, citing insufficient time and lack of evidence from federal claims.
Despite these efforts, the overall concern for non-citizen voting remains debatable with limited documented cases. The ongoing discussions and legal actions emphasize the tension between federal and state roles in safeguarding election integrity.
