Fauci’s Diary Reveals His Critiques and Reflections During Pandemic

Dr. Anthony Fauci, in his personal diary, expressed strong criticisms of President Donald Trump, describing him as “out of control,” an “embarrassment,” and an “idiot” while managing the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Fauci’s comments and personal reflections are unveiled in 1,141 pages of diary entries. During this time, Fauci noted both his own rise to fame and his critical stance toward Trump.

Senator Rand Paul, known for his criticism of Fauci, shared these documents prior to Fauci’s testimony before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The entries cover the period from December 2019 to August 2022. Fauci frequently accused Trump of disregarding scientific advice to hasten the reopening of the country, motivated by political ambitions before the 2020 election.

On May 22, 2020, Fauci wrote, “Trump getting out of control in pushing to open up the country and get the economy back before election day. He is desparate. This is all about re-election.” Fauci’s concerns continued as the election drew near, highlighting the surges in COVID-19 cases and Trump’s campaign actions.

Fauci’s relationship with Trump began with mutual cooperation, as he frequently addressed the public from the White House podium. However, as the pandemic persisted, tensions rose with Trump attacking Fauci’s credibility. Fauci expressed confusion about Trump’s public and private behavior, noting in a July 28, 2020 entry, “The POTUS is playing a weird game of acting Okay with me in person and saying that our relationship is fine to the press and then retweeting stuff that attacks me. He is a very strange guy.”

Disagreements between them intensified, particularly over the portrayal of pandemic data and media appearances. Fauci detailed irregular communications about his TV engagements, noting how Trump’s statements often contradicted scientific data.

Despite expressing criticisms, Fauci’s media visibility soared, becoming a central figure in national and international discussions. On May 21, 2020, he remarked on his unprecedented fame and media coverage. This increased profile brought him both attention and criticism.

Fauci reflected on Trump’s behavior during the first presidential debate against Joe Biden on September 29, 2020, calling it a “‘s–t show'” and criticized Trump’s failure to denounce extremist groups.

Beyond pandemic handling, Fauci criticized Trump’s stances on racial tensions and associations with conspiracy theories. Fauci’s diaries reveal his view of Trump, commenting on how the president allegedly misused data and praised debunked theories.

Even after Trump’s presidency ended, Fauci faced political pressures. On June 6, 2021, he noted attacks from the political right and specific Republican leaders, illustrating the continuing political divide over pandemic management strategies.
