The federal raid on Representative Ilhan Omar’s home in Washington, D.C., has raised significant alarms. Conservative watchdog leader Mike Howell warns of more revelations as the Minnesota Democrat faces multiple investigations concerning her immigration records and financial disclosures.
Howell, from the Oversight Project, suggests this investigation highlights broader concerns about congressional accountability. His group had earlier opposed a $1.031 million earmark backed by Omar. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted the raid, raising more questions about what investigators might uncover.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine F. Pirro acknowledged her office’s probe into Omar’s financial disclosures. Additionally, reports indicate federal investigators also subpoenaed Omar’s family members concerning immigration-related issues.
Federal agents raided Omar’s home early Monday, according to a source. Howell believes that more developments are imminent. He speculated that Democrats might pull back their defense of Omar as more details emerge.
“I think there’s other shoes that are going to drop here,” Howell told Fox News Digital.
Democrat reactions to the raid included reminders from Republicans about precedent-setting past raids. Howell noted a shift from outright defense of Omar to mentioning the political nature of the events.
There is broader discontent regarding congressional oversight and taxpayer-funded projects. Federal inquiries are delving into possible inaccuracies in Omar’s age and immigration paperwork when she came to the U.S. in 1995 and gained citizenship in 2000.
HSI agents subpoenaed over a dozen people, including Omar’s relatives, as part of the inquiry. Despite the uncertainty, Howell believes substantial evidence may have led to the warrant for investigating a sitting congresswoman.
Jonathan Fahey, a former acting ICE director, suggests the timing of the HSI search might involve examining recent documents related to longstanding immigration allegations.
Former FBI agent Nicole Parker stated Omar might avoid criminal liability if her father completed false forms during her minority. However, false information could result in potential denaturalization, exposing her to losing citizenship.
In January, the Oversight Project challenged a proposed $1.031 million earmark for Generation Hope MN’s Justice Empowerment Initiative, supported by Omar and Minnesota senators. Concerns were raised about the nonprofit’s finances and operations, resulting in the withdrawal of the funding request.
Howell criticizes the supposed norms of congressional loyalty to foreign interests above constitutional duties. He argues for stricter adherence to congressional oaths in light of these events.
Omar denies wrongdoing, alleging political weaponization by the Trump administration, describing the search as an abuse of power. Her office did not comment further, referencing ethics findings dismissing financial allegations.
