On the debate stage, Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar and Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth confronted each other for the first time in the race to succeed Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The backdrop of their debate was a large-scale welfare assistance fraud scandal in Minnesota. This scandal has gained national attention for nearly a year and influenced Walz’s decision to not seek re-election in 2026.
The fraud schemes diverted hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars from federal and state programs, leading to significant political fallout. Demuth, looking to become the first Republican governor of Minnesota in twenty years, repeatedly emphasized the importance of addressing the fraud during the debate.
Klobuchar stated, “I have been very clear. I would have caught that fraud. I would have done something about it.”
Demuth questioned Klobuchar’s connection to Governor Walz and his accountability for the scandal. She asked why Klobuchar did not take more proactive steps.
Klobuchar responded by explaining her actions once the fraud became public. She noted that she contacted the justice department, resulting in additional federal prosecutors investigating the case. She also addressed claims about her attendance at relevant hearings, clarifying her involvement in multiple discussions about fraud.
Beyond the fraud issue, the candidates discussed various policy areas. Demuth criticized Klobuchar’s support of ObamaCare, linking it to rising healthcare costs in Minnesota. Klobuchar, in contrast, defended her stance and highlighted her long-standing political experience.
On the topic of state taxes, both candidates agreed on resisting tax hikes. Klobuchar mentioned her history of bipartisan tax efforts, while Demuth firmly stated her opposition to tax increases.
Klobuchar launched her gubernatorial bid shortly after Governor Walz decided not to pursue another term. She has a strong political background, having served in the U.S. Senate since winning her first election in 2006. Klobuchar’s prior roles include Hennepin County attorney and a candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.
Demuth, on the other hand, began her political career with her election to the Minnesota House in 2018. She became the GOP leader at the start of 2023 and took on the role of Speaker more recently. In the Republican primary, she led over a field that included My Pillow founder Mike Lindell, who had the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
