FIFA’s Unprecedented Decision Allows Suspended U.S. Player to Compete

If Balogun repeats an infringement of a similar nature, the suspension will be enforced alongside any additional penalties.

President Trump acknowledged FIFA’s decision on his social media platform, Truth Social, praising the organization for reversing what he termed a ‘great injustice.’ However, he did not disclose his conversation with Infantino or claim any responsibility for the decision.

Balogun’s red card, received during the match for committing a foul against a defender, initially carried a one-game suspension. His presence in the game against Belgium provides a significant advantage to the U.S., as he is a key goal threat in the team’s efforts to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in 24 years.

FIFA’s decision has sparked debate, recalling other instances where the organization has modified rules potentially favoring prominent players or teams. For example, Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to play in the World Cup despite a prior red card suspension.
