A 21-year-old man from Florida, Gibson Nash, faces charges of first-degree murder following a series of alarming incidents that led to the discovery of his mother’s body. The case unfolded in Polk County, Florida.
Events Leading to the Arrest
Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office found his mother, Margaret Chu Dufour, deceased in her home. The officers had encountered Dufour before, during a ‘disturbance’ involving her moving company a month earlier. The moving company allegedly tried to overcharge her, which led deputies to assist her in moving her belongings into her new home.
On July 21, before police discovered the crime, Nash engaged in a series of traffic accidents while driving his mother’s blue BMW SUV. After a hit-and-run, he caused multiple crashes involving other vehicles, resulting in injuries to three people who required hospital treatment. Nash was found unconscious and covered in blood in the SUV. Deputies noted that the nature of the crash seemed insufficient to account for his condition.
Discovery of the Crime
Authorities went to Dufour’s home, listed on the vehicle’s registration, and found no immediate answer. Observing signs of forced entry, they accessed the house with a key found on the premises. Inside, they discovered Dufour had suffered a brutal attack and was deceased.
The medical examiner confirmed she died from blunt force injuries and strangulation. Sheriff Grady Judd described the murder as one of the most violent seen in his lengthy career in law enforcement.
Background and Motive
Prior incidents revealed a volatile relationship between Nash and his mother. In April, Dufour called police in Tennessee after Nash allegedly threatened her with a knife. He was arrested for similar threats a short time later, which included threatening to kill her over an Xbox dispute.
Despite these events, Dufour moved to Florida with the hope of obtaining mental health treatment for her son, who family members reported had bipolar disorder and other mental health issues. She returned to Tennessee to secure his release from jail with the intention to help him.
Investigation and Charges
While hospitalized after the crashes, tests revealed that the blood on Nash’s clothing belonged to his mother. His injuries indicated he was involved in a violent conflict. Nash is also charged with additional felonies for leaving crash scenes involving injuries.
Currently, Nash is held without bond in Polk County jail. Authorities are unable to interview him due to his lawyer’s restrictions, hired by Nash’s father. Sheriff Judd expressed the need for Nash to remain detained to ensure public safety, given his violent actions.
