New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo has a reputation for aggressive play on the field. He is known for his powerful runs and frequent collisions with defenders. On Sunday, during a matchup with the Houston Texans, NFL officials cited him for unnecessary roughness.
In the game, Skattebo received a handoff from quarterback J.J. McCarthy early in the first quarter. He found a gap and charged forward, lowering his helmet as he ran into safety M.J. Stewart. A flag was thrown, and Skattebo received a penalty for lowering his helmet.
It’s uncertain what Skattebo could have done differently in that moment. The NFL typically penalizes helmet-to-helmet contact when a player is defenseless or a defender initiates a tackle with the helmet, not the reverse.
Giants’ head coach John Harbaugh expressed his confusion over the call. The game against the Texans was a close contest, tied 14-14 at halftime, during Week 7 of the season.
This incident occurred after Skattebo did not have any carries in the previous week’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Coach Harbaugh denied any intentional benching of Skattebo, explaining the situation as an attempt to give all running backs an equal chance.
Skattebo’s previous fumbles had raised some concerns, but his presence in the lineup against the Texans suggested he remained a crucial part of the team’s strategy for Week 7.
