Governor Addresses Impact of Severe Storms Across Indiana

Following the severe storms on Tuesday, Governor Mike Braun highlighted the widespread effects felt across Indiana. Speaking at a press conference in Hammond, he noted that the northern areas experienced strong winds, with Gary recording gusts up to 99 miles per hour, causing significant damage statewide. Areas such as Newcastle in Henry County received over 10 inches of rain.

During a press conference at the Central Fire Station, Braun, alongside U.S. Representative Frank Mrvan, detailed the coordinated response efforts involving the Department of Natural Resources, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Transportation. Homeland Security is at the forefront of these efforts.

Indiana Department of Homeland Security Executive Director Jonathan Whitham praised local communities for their effective initial response. The state emergency center is handling numerous assistance requests, actively channeling support from state and local partners.

The top priority, according to Braun, is restoring power, as the Northern Indiana Public Service Company reported the largest outage event in its history, affecting over 300,000 residents. Efforts to prevent price gouging at gas stations are also underway, coinciding with the state’s gas tax holiday.

Federal support is anticipated; Braun suggested that FEMA might be called in for assistance. Representative Mrvan confirmed contact with FEMA and stressed the importance of collaboration among federal, state, and local agencies.

Mrvan acknowledged the efforts of first responders across Northwest Indiana and emphasized community support. Local declarations of emergency are expected as damages are assessed, potentially leading to federal relief through FEMA.

Gary Mayor Eddie Melton declared a local disaster emergency, thanking state officials for their assistance. He highlighted significant disruptions in Gary, including uprooted trees and blocked roads, and announced the YWCA as an emergency overnight shelter.

Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott discussed the severe impact on his city, noting over 90 mph winds caused widespread damage, leaving about two-thirds of residents without power. Restoration efforts are slow; McDermott warned of prolonged outages.
