After that disappointing playoff exit, the Packers extended the contracts of head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst. During Sunday’s game, the Packers initially secured a 22-10 lead in the third quarter. However, the Vikings, with backup quarterback Carson Wentz, scored 29 unanswered points. This resulted in a 39-22 victory for the Vikings before an audience of 66,940 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
The Packers have now lost six consecutive games. In this period, they have given up substantial leads, twice against the Bears, once against the Denver Broncos, and in the recent game against the Vikings. Frustration among fans is rising due to the nature of these losses.
During an ESPN Madison appearance, Steve ‘Homer’ True argued that the Packers should seriously consider dismissing LaFleur, despite his recent contract extension. ‘You are making a coach something he’s not,’ True said. ‘He’s capable of blowing the game at any time, regardless of the lead.’
True’s criticism stems from LaFleur’s history of losing games where the Packers held strong leads. However, dismissing LaFleur before Week 2 seems hasty. The team has opportunities for improvement this season, particularly with Micah Parsons expected to return from an ACL injury, and potentially Josh Jacobs coming off the commissioner exempt list.
