Cruise operators are receiving requests to reduce their voyages through specific fjords in Greenland. Local communities have expressed concerns about the environmental and social impacts of these ships on their surroundings.
Concerns from Local Residents
Residents in Greenland have raised issues such as noise pollution, effects on wildlife, and potential disruptions to recreational and traditional activities like hunting and fishing. According to a government press release from Naalakkersuisut, these concerns prompted the new guidance.
The aim is to minimize harm in vulnerable natural areas and wildlife, while also respecting residents’ wishes to maintain the recreational and cultural values of the land, said the government.
New Recommendations for Cruise Lines
Naalakkersuisut now advises cruise ships to avoid these sensitive fjord areas or at least limit their presence there. They also call on cruise lines, ship captains, and others in the industry to consider local conditions in their planning. This guidance might lead to formal restrictions in the future.
Developing Zoning Rules
Naalakkersuisut and Greenland’s municipalities are currently working on zoning rules under the Tourism Act. These rules will specify areas open to cruise tourism and those facing restrictions. They plan to implement these after a public consultation involving residents, businesses, and other stakeholders.
As Greenland draws more expedition and large passenger ships in the summer, concerns about noise, wildlife disruption, and interference with recreation are becoming more significant.
Upcoming Cruise Season
Ports like Qaqortoq and Nanortalik are popular stops, with over 20 cruise calls expected soon. Major cruise lines like Carnival, Oceania, Azamara, Seabourn, and others are visiting these ports, according to Cruise Industry News.
Travelers have shared mixed opinions online about the effects of cruising in Greenland. Some point to pollution and wildlife disruption. Others highlight the accessibility cruises provide, allowing people to see remote areas quickly and affordably.
Cruises are not eco-friendly. No ship is flawless. They create waste and disrupt wildlife,
a Reddit user commented, while noting, They’re a cheap way to see many places in a short time.
Another traveler added that cruises allow many to visit places otherwise inaccessible, like Scoresby Sund.
Fox News Digital has contacted Naalakkersuisut for further comments.
