Gregg Allman’s Musical Legacy Celebrated in New Documentary

A new documentary titled The Music of My Soul, centered on the legendary musician Gregg Allman, debuted in New York City. The film features an extensive collection of Allman’s music and includes a track by country artist Jackson Dean. Dean’s song, “My Cross to Bear,” serves as a tribute to Allman at the film’s conclusion. It highlights the legacy of Allman, known for iconic songs like “Midnight Rider,” “Whipping Post,” and “I’m No Angel.”

Brian Levy of Subtext remarked on the film’s ability to showcase Allman’s contributions to American culture. He stated, “Gregg Allman’s music is woven into the fabric of American culture, and this film captures both the artistry and the humanity behind the legend.” Levy expressed pride in presenting the film to American audiences, aiming to introduce Allman’s legacy to new generations.

“We’re proud to bring the film to American audiences, offering devoted fans rare insight and archival material while introducing Gregg’s legacy to a new generation.”

Subtext, an independent U.S. film production and distribution company, holds the North American rights to the documentary. Michael Lehman, a close friend and collaborator of Allman, shared his sentiments, emphasizing the film’s portrayal of Allman’s true spirit. Lehman stated, “This film captures his true essence, and it’s profoundly meaningful to be able to share his remarkable story with the world. Gregg’s music has outlived him and will bring joy to many generations in the future.”

Following its New York City premiere on June 9, the documentary is set to open in Allman’s hometown of Macon, Georgia, on June 11. It will also have a limited run in Los Angeles and New York before a nationwide release on June 17. Information on screenings is available on the film’s official website.
