Gutfeld: Trump’s Unusual Crusade Over Daylight Saving Time

1 hour ago 0

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld and the ‘Gutfeld’ panel recently discussed President Donald Trump’s criticism of Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., due to their disagreement over daylight saving time. As Americans set their clocks back an hour, Congress has not progressed on resolving this issue in time.

Earlier in the year, the House passed a bill allowing states to choose daylight saving time year-round. Despite its popularity among voters and Trump, the bill stalled in the Senate.

Trump has been urging the Senate to take action on this matter while traveling across states to support Republican power. He expressed frustration that the Senate has not acted on the daylight saving bill, which he claims a majority of Americans support. On Truth Social, he stressed, “Most people are demanding light in the evening, but ALL want not to change their clocks anymore. TAKE A VOTE!”

The legislation, known as the Sunshine Protection Act, faces opposition from lawmakers on both sides. Trump increased pressure by sharing the cellphone number of Sen. Tom Cotton, a vocal opponent of the bill, asking supporters to call Cotton and demand action.

Sen. Cotton responded, “No one likes changing the clock, me included, but Congress has enacted permanent Daylight Saving Time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter.” Cotton emphasized he prioritizes the needs of Arkansans.

“Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I’ll always put Arkansas first,” Cotton said.

The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act with significant bipartisan support in July. However, the bill remains stuck in the Senate with no clear progress.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., urged the Senate to act, stating to Fox News Digital in October, “There’s no reason Americans should lose an hour of sunlight at the end of the day when more daylight means more time with our families, more activity for our businesses, and safer communities.” Scalise praised Trump’s efforts to make daylight saving time permanent and advocated for the Senate to take up the bill.

The Senate, after the election, faces a busy schedule with various outstanding legislations. Finding enough floor time to address the Sunshine Protection Act will be challenging.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., commented, “The president feels strongly on it like he does a lot of issues. It’s something we’re having conversations about, but there’s no clear path forward or consensus on it yet.”

Reporter Alex Miller from Fox News Digital covers the U.S. Senate’s activities and developments.
