The eastern U.S. is experiencing intense heat leading up to the Fourth of July weekend, impacting various Independence Day events. Communities have altered plans due to dangerous, record-breaking temperatures, with forecasts predicting highs in the 90s Fahrenheit, and some areas like Philadelphia and Boston possibly reaching over 100 degrees (30 degrees Celsius). The National Weather Service has warned the heat will persist across much of the central and eastern U.S. through Friday and continue along the East Coast through the weekend.

Event Adjustments Due to Heat

In response to the oppressive heat, Boston will delay entrance to the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, rescheduling it to 4 p.m. instead of noon on Saturday. Philadelphia has shortened its Thursday morning parade route, canceled an afternoon Block Party, and pushed back evening activities at Independence Mall. Lower Windsor Township in Pennsylvania postponed an America 250 celebration to July 8, and Norristown, Pennsylvania canceled a parade due to safety concerns, although they will proceed with fireworks and an afternoon party.

Heat Dome and Community Measures

The U.S. is currently under the influence of a heat dome, trapping heat and humidity from the Midwest to the East Coast. Many communities have taken steps such as opening cooling centers to keep residents safe. Boston museums are providing free admission to locals, and Providence, Rhode Island, has extended pool and waterpark hours.

Sports and Entertainment Amid Heat

The Philadelphia Phillies provided free water bottles to spectators as temperatures hit 98 degrees during their game. Participants such as a fife and drum corps adapted outfits to linen for comfort, and Taylor Swift fans faced extreme heat at Madison Square Garden in New York. Central Park recorded temperatures of 100 degrees, a first since 2012.

Electric Grids Under Pressure

Officials have asked residents to conserve energy to prevent stress on electric grids. In New York, the call to set air conditioning to 78 degrees received mixed reactions. While demand for electricity peaked due to the heatwave, grid operators like PJM Interconnection reported a significant cushion of energy capacity. New England’s grid operator suggested consumers limit energy usage during peak hours.
