Patrick Dempsey Declines Potential Senate Run in Maine

3 weeks ago 0

Patrick Dempsey, known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, will not seek a Senate seat in Maine. Despite speculation that he might replace Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate facing allegations of sexual assault, Dempsey confirmed his decision through an op-ed for the Portland Press Herald.

In his piece, Dempsey wrote, “I kept coming back to one question: Do I truly want to serve in Congress? After a lot of thought, I realized the answer is no.” He emphasized the honor of public service but believes his current pursuits offer more effective contributions.

The announcement followed Platner’s contemplation of departing the race amid emerging allegations against him. These accusations have led to the withdrawal of endorsements from his staunch supporters in Congress.

Prior to the scandal, a survey by Tavern Research indicated Dempsey as a potential contender. Others listed included former state Senate President Troy Jackson and Nirav Shah. Jackson has filed exploration paperwork, while Shah, along with state Rep. Valli Geiger and state House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, expressed tentative interest without confirming candidacies.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows also noted consideration of entering the race should Platner exit.

Dempsey reflected on numerous queries about a potential candidacy, noting, “It’s flattering, and I don’t take it lightly. I love my home state of Maine,” emphasizing his concern over the country’s trajectory.

He highlighted the impact of his work with the Dempsey Center, which supports cancer patients in memory of his mother. “The Dempsey Center has shown me what’s possible when people put aside differences and focus on helping one another,” Dempsey commented. He hopes for leaders in the Senate who embody these values.

Should Platner step down before Monday, the state Democratic Party committee has until July 27 to nominate a replacement.
