Tragic Crash During Wildfire Battle

Two pilots lost their lives in a helicopter crash while combating the Dome Fire in Yosemite National Park. The aircraft was performing water bucket drops on Sunday, as reported by The Associated Press.

The pilots involved were identified as Ryan Cutter and Greg King. They were the only occupants and were working for Precision Helicopters, a contractor supporting firefighting operations.

Remembering the Pilots

Ryan Cutter had been flying helicopters since 2011, with recent employment at Precision Helicopters. His LinkedIn profile and a GoFundMe page describe him as a beloved husband and friend.

Greg King had experience fighting fires in Alaska and worked closely with the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection. His ties to the firefighting community were deeply rooted.

Precision Helicopters paid tribute to both pilots, stating, “These two men brought honor to the mission. Their dedication and service will never be forgotten.”

Details of the Incident

The Super Puma helicopter crashed near Ostrander Lake, approximately seven miles northeast of Wawona. Benjamin Cossel from the Federal Complex Incident Management Team shared information about the ongoing investigation.

The FAA and NTSB are both involved, with the NTSB leading the investigation.

Ongoing Firefighting Efforts

As nearly 580 personnel continue to battle the Dome Fire, efforts are focused on containment, which remains at 15%. The fire has burned approximately 4.7 square miles.

A procession in Merced honored the fallen pilots, drawing public condolences and prayers for their families.
