Teen Lifeguard Saves Child from Dangerous Surf

Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old lifeguard in Santa Cruz, California, has gained recognition for his bravery after rescuing a child caught in perilous rip tides and powerful waves. The child’s father expressed immense gratitude for Williams’ courageous actions.

Father’s Gratitude

Sumit Rai recounted the distressing experience of receiving a phone call from his 10-year-old son, who was swept into the ocean at Seabright State Beach. Rai’s son Nathaniel expressed his fear, believing he was facing a life-threatening situation.

Nathaniel was standing on wet sand near the shoreline when a wave knocked him down and pulled him into deep water. Witnesses explained that the rescue took longer than the viral video depicted, with Williams clinging to the child against the turbulent surf.

Conditions at Seabright State Beach

California State Parks had issued a high surf advisory due to swell conditions generating waves between 4 to 6 feet, with occasional sets reaching 10 feet. Despite these challenging conditions, Williams sprang into action from Tower 2 upon spotting Nathaniel struggling.

Williams, after notifying others, left his gear at the base of the tower and hurried toward the water, equipped with fins and a buoy. As captured in the viral video, he held Nathaniel amid the rough surf, refusing to let go despite the relentless waves.

Assistance and Recognition

Fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen joined Williams to assist during the rescue. Rai stressed the remarkable effort required to carry a limp boy through crashing waves, weighing around 100 pounds. Rai expressed his inability to repay Williams sufficiently for his heroic act.

The lifeguards successfully brought Nathaniel to shore and evaluated him for injuries. Rai, away from his children during the incident, eagerly anticipated reuniting with his son, expressing relief and gratitude for Williams’ actions.

National Attention

Following the incident’s nationwide attention, President Donald Trump suggested Williams deserved a White House invitation and national honors. Rai agreed, praising Williams for his courage and stating his deep appreciation for saving his son.

Reflecting on his role, Williams expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return Nathaniel safely to his family. He acknowledged the significance of local lifeguards in the community, highlighting 34 rescues performed by the team that weekend and more than 5,000 preventative contacts along the coastline.
