In recent years, high school football has seen an increase in participation after experiencing a decade-long decline. This shift coincides with important changes in safety practices, aimed at reducing the risks associated with the sport.
Coach John Hart’s current approach to training offers a glimpse into these changes. At Brownsburg High School, where Hart is the head coach, practices have undergone a significant transformation. Unlike 15 years ago, today’s sessions do not include tackling to the ground. In addition, practice durations are typically limited to 90 minutes or less.
If the John Hart from 15 years ago observed my modern-day practices, he would probably be quite surprised at the differences.
Despite the positive aspects, a recent landmark study has introduced new concerns about the sport’s safety. These lingering questions will likely continue to influence the ongoing dialogue around how to protect young athletes on the field.
