High-Speed Chase and Arrests Follow Interstate 75 Street Takeover

Authorities arrested four individuals after a major street takeover led to the closure of all northbound lanes on Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County, Florida, early Saturday. The incident resulted in a high-speed chase where speeds reached 140 mph.

The event began around 1:30 a.m. near mile marker 266 in Thonotosassa. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) traffic cameras recorded hundreds of vehicles gathering, disrupting traffic as some drivers engaged in burnouts on the interstate, as per the arrest report.

As troopers arrived, video footage showed vehicles quickly dispersing with drivers and spectators hurrying back to their cars. Most participants left without charges; however, a green BMW fled rapidly, prompting a chase by a trooper.

“While most of those involved were allowed to leave without facing charges, one green BMW allegedly sped away from the scene, leading a trooper to initiate a pursuit.”

The BMW reached approximately 140 mph, significantly exceeding the speed limit, before exiting the interstate and stopping in a parking lot. The driver, Yulian Lugo, 25, was arrested and charged with aggravated fleeing to elude and participating in a street takeover, both considered felonies.

Three passengers, aged 24 and two 18-year-olds, were also arrested and charged with misdemeanor highway racing. All were booked into the Hillsborough County Jail.
