New York Knicks Consider James Wiseman for Roster Spot

The New York Knicks celebrated a long-awaited championship victory, ending a drought of over 50 years. As training camp begins, the Knicks’ front office faces one final decision regarding their roster. With the team signing five veteran players to camp deals, only one or two spots remain open. The depth at the big-man position behind the starters is minimal. Among the potential players, one has a notable connection within the organization.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported on The Stein Line that James Wiseman shares a history with Knicks coach Mike Brown, which could influence the camp competition. Stein noted, “If Wiseman makes the Knicks’ Opening Night roster, it will confirm a reunion for the former No. 2 overall pick with former Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown.”

Stein emphasized that Brown, known currently as the coach who led New York to its first championship in over five decades, also previously worked with Wiseman during his early years with the Warriors under coach Steve Kerr. This connection might play a crucial role in Wiseman’s potential fit with the Knicks.

Stein added, “Word is that Brown is indeed a Wiseman fan. The newly crowned champs appear to have a clear need for a third big man behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond,” pinpointing a gap in the roster that Wiseman could fill.

However, Wiseman’s inclusion relies on more than support from Brown. At 25, Wiseman offers the necessary size but has only participated in five games across two years. Training camp will serve as a critical test to determine if he can still perform effectively.

The competition for roster spots is further intensified by the wings—Bruce Brown, John Konchar, and Ochai Agbaji—each providing significant contributions. Every player cut during October’s roster selection will be felt, given all five veterans present solid options.

Drew Eubanks offers a safer selection for the team’s roster, whereas choosing Wiseman presents a larger risk. With established stars like Towns and Drummond leading the lineup, a safer choice might be prudent. Nonetheless, Coach Brown’s familiarity with Wiseman might influence the ultimate decision.
