Hochul Treads Carefully Amid Criticism of NYC Mayor Mamdani in Debate

1 day ago 0

New York Governor Kathy Hochul avoided directly defending socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a gubernatorial debate, after accusations from her Republican challenger of antisemitism and anti-Americanism. Bruce Blakeman, Nassau County Executive, criticized Mamdani for signing an executive order diluting the definition of antisemitism and questioned Hochul’s endorsement of Mamdani.

Blakeman emphasized that Mamdani doesn’t align with American values, accusing him of supporting collectivism, which affects property rights, and labeling him anti-Christian for not attending an important religious event. Hochul replied by opting to discuss a different topic regarding the NYPD’s response under Mamdani, prompting Blakeman to commend Mamdani’s choice of Jessica Tisch as NYPD commissioner.

The debate occasionally shifted to other topics, and Hochul faced queries about her lack of defense for Mamdani during a subsequent press conference. Hochul dismissed the claims made by Blakeman, stating she wouldn’t engage with such arguments, underscoring her partnership with the mayor and rejecting Blakeman’s characterization.

Throughout the debate, topics included President Donald Trump, a recent ICE-related shooting, energy prices, and inflation. In New York, Democrats significantly outnumber Republicans, but Blakeman’s support has grown, closing the gap to single digits in polls conducted in September. The Siena College poll showed Hochul at 50% support among likely voters, with Blakeman at 41%.

Voters also indicated that Mamdani’s endorsement could be beneficial for Hochul’s re-election campaign, with a majority viewing it positively.
