Hollywood Bowl Embraces Advanced Audio Technology

On stage at live concerts, sound engineers constantly battle unwanted noise. A kick drum blends into a vocal mic, a guitar amp disrupts a monitor feed, or the singer drops the mic, muffling lyrics. Traditionally, the solution has involved equalization, compression, volume control, and skilled judgment—manual efforts to manage sound in real time. But at the Hollywood Bowl this summer, an innovative approach is in progress.

A machine learning system named Source Intelligence, created by L’Acoustics—a French audio company supplying the Bowl’s sound infrastructure—is transforming live sound management. It listens to each on-stage microphone and isolates a vocalist’s voice with exceptional precision. This real-time isolation wasn’t previously possible, achieving up to 40 decibels of rejection on unwanted noise, a substantial advancement compared to the competition.

Fred Vogler, principal sound designer at the Bowl since 2003, noted the impact. “Suddenly, the usual interference from guitar amps or drums is gone. You’re hearing just the vocal.”

The Comprehensive Audio Upgrade

The Hollywood Bowl’s audio overhaul includes the new flagship L Series line array system and an extensive immersive surround sound installation. L’Acoustics’ L1 system, a major architectural evolution since the modern line source array’s invention in 1993, serves as the upgrade’s centerpiece. Line arrays, composed of vertically arranged speaker cabinets, direct audio precisely across large spaces, though gaps between them impact coherence.

L1 addresses this by seamlessly integrating speakers into a redesigned cabinet with built-in angles, minimizing interfaces. This results in a system 30% smaller in footprint, appearing more compact on stage, yet more potent than its predecessor, the K Series. Engineers significantly reduced sound variance from 6 to 9 decibels to about 3 decibels, enhancing the listener experience. Vogler describes the upgrade from K Series to L Series as more remarkable than expected.

Machine Learning’s Role in Live Sound

While the speakers showcase advances in physics, the AI components introduce something new—the application of machine learning in real-time live sound. Source Intelligence, the new vocal isolation tool, employs algorithms to differentiate a singer’s voice amid the chaotic acoustic environment of a large concert, delivering a clearer signal to the mixing board.

This technology started as a DJ tool, separating a stereo track into parts—vocals, bass, drums, effects—and spatializing them in 3D at nightclubs. Recognizing its potential for live sound, L’Acoustics adapted it for mixing engineers. Vogler highlights the improvement, stating that engineers can now increase vocal presence without enhancing background noise, improving intelligibility at concerts.

Source Intelligence is now employed in major tours, including those of Harry Styles, the Weeknd, and Bruno Mars, whose mixing engineers praise the technology.

Immersive Sound Innovation

The Bowl has also installed an immersive surround sound system using L’Acoustics’ L-ISA platform, wrapping the 17,500-seat amphitheater with distributed speakers that enable spatial audio. Scott Sugden, L’Acoustics’ product management director, claims it’s the largest immersive sound deployment by geometry worldwide.

L-ISA operates in two modes: a room engine that uses digital reverberation to simulate an enclosed space and a surround object mode that spatializes individual sounds. This allows engineers to create unique audio experiences, making a singer feel enveloped or breaking barriers to communicate directly with the audience. Vogler has tested it cautiously on orchestral and pop performances, seeking subtle impacts.

“If you turned it off, you’d notice something missing,” Vogler notes.

Hollywood Bowl’s Historic Leap

Founded in 1922, the Hollywood Bowl has a tradition of innovation, starting its partnership with L’Acoustics during a 2004 renovation. It became the first venue to utilize the K1 system in 2013 and now, the L1. Vu emphasizes that maintaining world-class status requires prioritizing sound quality—a core ethos since the Bowl’s founding.

All touring artists use the Bowl’s system without augmenting it, demonstrating confidence in the infrastructure. The L Series, Source Intelligence, and L-ISA signify the Bowl’s ambitious technological advancement since amplified sound became standard—betting on a future of smarter, more precise, and immersive live music. Audiences just need to arrive and enjoy.
