House Ethics Committee Investigates Texas Congressman Lance Gooden

1 week ago 0

The House of Representatives’ internal watchdog is currently reviewing allegations against Texas Republican Lance Gooden. On Monday, he described them as “baseless.” The House Committee on Ethics announced the investigation but did not clarify the reasons immediately. Gooden stated in a message to Fox News Digital that the probe is related to finance matters, denying any wrongdoing.

Response to Allegations

Rep. Lance Gooden, a House Judiciary Committee participant, labeled the allegations as “bogus spending allegations” made by “dishonest unelected OCC bureaucrats.” He mentioned being the fifth Texas Republican allied with the president to face such claims, expressing confidence that the committee would find them baseless.

Committee Review Process

The committee disclosed it is extending a review of an issue reported to the Office of Congressional Conduct (OCC) on June 10, 2026. This step precedes deciding on a full investigation.

The notice indicated that the committee would decide on its actions by November 9.

Role of the OCC

The OCC functions as an independent, nonpartisan body, examining allegations against House lawmakers, staff, and officers. It assesses these claims and determines if they require referral to the House Ethics Committee. The OCC investigates diverse allegations, including those related to earmarks, travel, financial disclosure, and legal expense funds.

Next Steps for the Investigation

Monday’s announcement suggests the Ethics panel is conducting a preliminary investigation. Lawmakers may now decide whether to escalate it into a formal probe, which involves an investigatory subcommittee.
