Ilhan Omar Triumphs in Minnesota’s 5th District Amid Controversy

43 minutes ago 0

House Democrat Ilhan Omar has achieved a significant victory in Minnesota’s 5th congressional district. This comes shortly after her Washington, D.C. home was searched by Homeland Security Investigations agents on October 12. With 99% of the 344,118 votes counted, Omar led Republican challenger John Nagel with 76.5% of the vote compared to his 16.2%.

Omar’s success is notable given the recent federal raid linked to unproven claims involving immigration document fraud. These allegations suggest that either Omar or her late father may have lied on immigration documents when arriving from Somalia or during her U.S. citizenship process. Omar has denied these accusations, with her attorney labeling the investigation as “politically motivated.”

By Wednesday morning at 7:10 a.m. ET, Omar had garnered 263,166 votes, translating to 76.5% of the total. Nagel received 55,805 votes, or 16.2%. Independent candidate DeVelle Jackson secured 24,215 votes, making up 7% of the total. With over 99% of the votes counted, The Associated Press declared Omar the winner in this district.

This year’s outcome slightly surpasses previous years. In 2024, Omar defeated her Republican opponent with 74.4%. During 2022, she won with 74.3%, and in 2020, Omar took 64.3% of the vote. Her results in 2026 are the strongest since her first House election campaign in 2018, where she captured 78% of the vote.

On social media, Omar shared her gratitude, stating: “Thank you, Minnesota! I’m incredibly honored to continue to represent you in the People’s House with a resounding mandate. We will not allow Trump to silence us.” Her win aligns with a broader Democratic movement known as the “Blue Wave,” which resulted in Democrats gaining control of both the Senate and House, restricting President Trump’s actions during his second term.

The October raid on Omar’s home is part of an ongoing investigation by federal authorities. According to sources cited by The New York Times, the search warrant involved potential immigration-related offenses such as false statements and fraud. Newsweek has not independently verified these claims.

In a statement after the raid, a Department of Justice spokesperson confirmed: “Today in the Washington D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice as part of a federal criminal investigation.”

Responding on social media, Omar asserted, “Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement.” She accused former President Trump of perpetuating baseless smears against her.

Jacklyn Rogers, Omar’s communications director, criticized the raid, calling it an “outrageous” misuse of power and asserted, “The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong.”

Former President Donald Trump, addressing the raid, expressed personal disdain for Omar, calling her “crooked” but distanced himself from the investigation.

Why Is Omar Under Investigation?

Homeland Security Secretary Mark Mullin announced in September that authorities were examining Omar’s immigration status. This includes an unsubstantiated claim that she married her brother for immigration benefits. Omar has repeatedly denied these allegations.

Mullin mentioned potential illegal activities during Omar’s family’s migration to the U.S. Vice President JD Vance indicated earlier this year that the Department of Justice is investigating Omar for possible immigration fraud. These comments were made amidst the “Feeding Our Future” scandal, involving a Minnesota nonprofit accused of committing fraud to obtain $250 million in federal reimbursements.

Omar has consistently refuted any implication in this scheme, clarifying to Newsweek, “Any claim I had knowledge of this scheme is flat-out false.” She condemned the misuse of funds meant for feeding children.
