Intense Drone and Missile Strikes in Kiev Result in Civilian Casualties

From Wednesday evening until Thursday morning, Russia launched a significant attack on Kiev using drones and missiles. The sustained assault lasted for 11 hours and resulted in at least 21 civilian deaths, with many more injured. This attack was a response from Moscow to Ukraine’s recent offensive targeting Russian oil facilities.

Explosions reverberated throughout the Ukrainian capital. More than 50,000 residents sought refuge in metro stations following air raid alerts, according to Metro Kiev reports. Emergency teams worked all day to search for victims amid the rubble of destroyed apartment buildings.

The Russian Defense Ministry issued a statement noting that the deadly assault was due to Ukraine’s long-range attacks that led to a severe fuel shortage in Russia. These Ukrainian attacks have focused on oil refineries, creating a fuel crisis that is impacting Russian civilians, who are already feeling the economic strain of the war. According to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, these attacks are part of a 40-day blitzkrieg strategy.

Technology advancements in drone engineering have recently given Ukraine an edge, as stated by Western officials and analysts. Ukrainian forces have targeted supply routes, particularly towards Crimea, to hinder Russian military momentum. The move has triggered a significant fuel crisis on the Black Sea peninsula, posing challenges to the Kremlin’s narrative of winning the war.

Ukrainian authorities are pushing for diplomatic negotiations with Putin. However, Moscow’s response has been continued retaliation. Recent diplomatic efforts, including those led by the U.S. under former President Donald Trump, have yet to yield results. Analysts suggest Putin anticipates that Western support for Ukraine will diminish and that Ukrainian resistance will ultimately collapse under strategic bombing campaigns.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, described a ‘night of horror’ as explosions shattered the peace of the capital, home to nearly 3 million people before the war. The air was filled with bright flashes and loud booms as drones and missiles exploded. Anti-aircraft fire illuminated the sky, accompanied by a massive black smoke cloud.

Over 30 locations in the city recorded damage, including about 20 residential buildings, officials reported. Serhii Budko from Kiev recounted the terror as ballistic missiles struck his neighborhood. In Desnianskyi district, people were trapped in a nine-story building, similar devastation occurred in Darnytskyi, where much of another nine-story building collapsed.

Beyond Kiev, in the central region of Dnipropetrovsk, a Russian attack resulted in the death of a seven-year-old girl and injured four others of the same family, according to regional head Oleksandr Hanzha.

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed that the bombing focused exclusively on military-related targets. However, Russian air strikes in Ukraine have repeatedly hit civilian areas. According to the United Nations, the conflict has resulted in over 16,000 civilian deaths.

There are no reliable figures on battlefield casualties. A report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates that up to 1.8 million soldiers from both sides have been killed, wounded, or are missing, with Russian troops constituting a large portion of these numbers.

Ukraine Appeals for Enhanced Air Defense Support

The missile strike involved ‘long-range precise weapons’ and drones targeting factories and energy facilities around Kiev, as well as ‘military airfield infrastructure’ across Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated.

Ukraine’s air defenses have improved, particularly against Russian drones, but intercepting ballistic missiles remains challenging. These missiles comprised about a third of the projectiles launched overnight. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha highlighted in April that the country’s arms factories meet up to 75% of its military needs. However, he and other officials urge international partners to provide more Patriot systems for better defense.

Ukrainian Forces Strike Russian Oil Refinery

While facing attacks, Ukrainian forces targeted one of Russia’s largest oil refineries in Nizhny Novgorod region, causing a significant fire, according to Ukraine’s General Staff.

Ukrainian forces also attacked a railway bridge over the Siverskyi Donets River in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region. The bridge was a crucial route for the transportation of Russian troops and supplies.
