Democratic Call for Federal Investigation

Democratic lawmakers are urging a federal probe into whether data collected from attendees at events related to the U.S. 250th anniversary celebrations could benefit President Trump’s allies in the 2026 midterms. Representatives Jared Huffman and Joe Morelle have requested the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate Freedom 250. This Trump-backed group played a key role in organizing this year’s semiquincentennial celebrations.

This follows an inquiry by Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee into Freedom 250’s activities and its link to America250, a commission created by Congress for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Concerns Over Data Usage

The request to GAO seeks to ascertain whether personal information gathered at Freedom 250 events will be used politically. Huffman and Morelle expressed concerns about Freedom 250’s data collection through systems tied to Trump’s network.

They argue that this data, gathered using taxpayer funds, potentially provides a strategic advantage for Trump’s allies in the 2026 elections. The call for an investigation includes demands for information on data storage, control, and protection measures against Republican political access.

Allegations of Data Collection

Lawmaker allegations suggest Americans registering for free Freedom 250 tickets provided personal details like names, emails, and ZIP codes. The processing allegedly used Campaign Nucleus, a platform owned by Brad Parscale, former Trump campaign manager. Further accusations involve Dyspatchit and Ace Specialties, with data gathering concerns about additional attendee information.

Freedom 250’s privacy policy acknowledges the collection of personal, geographic, and operational data. While claiming not to sell this data, the policy mentions sharing with vendors under confidentiality agreements.

About Freedom 250

Established by Trump in December 2025, Freedom 250 aimed to manage events marking U.S. independence’s 250th anniversary. Despite claims of being non-partisan, the group faced accusations of overshadowing the America250 commission. Headed by Keith Krach, Freedom 250 faced Democratic critiqued for its operations.

Difference Between America250 and Freedom 250

America250, formed by Congress, coordinates semiquincentennial celebrations with the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission. Conversely, Freedom 250, founded by Trump, focuses on leading major events for the 250th anniversary.

Brad Parscale’s Role

Brad Parscale, once Trump’s digital director and 2020 campaign manager, founded Campaign Nucleus. His involvement in Freedom 250’s data collection raises concerns about blending governmental event data with political datasets.

The House Natural Resources Committee

This committee oversees public lands and issues related to the Department of the Interior and National Park Service. As the ranking Democrat, Huffman has been steering the investigation into Freedom 250’s actions, questioning its handling of federal resources intended for U.S. 250th celebrations.
