Israeli Military Conducts Extensive Exercises Amid Rising Tensions

1 day ago 0

The Israeli military initiated significant domestic exercises on Sunday. These maneuvers aim to address unexpected border infiltrations and ground raids in northern and central Israel. Multiple divisions and air units are participating, responding to increasing regional tensions.

The drills, lasting 48 hours, recall the 1973 Yom Kippur War. During that conflict, Egypt and Syria masked their surprise attack preparations as exercises. Experts caution that current escalating tensions may lead to hazardous errors.

The operations involve the Northern Command’s 210th Division, the West Bank Division, as well as the Central Command’s 98th and 96th divisions. The Israeli Air Force is also participating.

The exercises target not Iran directly, but Iran’s proxies and allies at Israel’s borders, according to analysts.

Scheduled just before Israel’s October 27 elections, the exercises focus on maintaining alertness and defense readiness. Troops are practicing various scenarios, such as surprise attacks and infiltrations, based on lessons from the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks.

Dr. Ehud Eilam, a national security analyst, mentions that the exercise targets non-state actors, supported or not by Iran, in Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.

According to Eilam, “The exercises emphasize border protection.” The aim is to ensure an uninterrupted election day on October 27 and signal a warning to Iran and others not to provoke during this period.

The drills occur shortly after Iran demonstrated military strength by launching ballistic missiles. This showcase prompted Israel to raise its alert levels, preparing for potential targeted strikes against Iran.

During a visit to the IDF’s Central Command, Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir emphasized the growing risk of escalation. He noted troop deployments had been reinforced for security, especially with the involvement of the 98th Division.

Eilam added that large exercises always pose a risk of miscalculation, where movements could be mistaken for attack preparations. He referenced the Cold War, when troop drills often signaled potential conflict.

Egypt and Syria once used exercises to mask their real military intentions, resulting in the 1973 surprise attack on Israel.

Eilam suggested that both Israel and Iran are wary of each other in the current climate, noting the potential for misjudgments leading to unintended conflict.

While future Israeli action against Iran remains unsure, both nations are communicating readiness to avoid starting a war.
