Jack Alexy has established a new world record in the men’s 100 freestyle. Representing the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Alexy achieved this feat at the 2026 USA Swimming Short Course World Championship Trials in Westmont, Illinois. Racing for the California Golden Bears, he completed the race with a time of 44.64 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 44.84 seconds. His reaction was one of intense joy, as he realized his place in history.
Alexy competed in the men’s 100m freestyle final on Day 3 of the Short Course World Championship Trials at FMC Natatorium, Westmont, Illinois, on October 30, 2026. He has a history of approaching world records. In December 2024, at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Budapest, he won his first individual gold medal in the men’s 100-meter freestyle, clocking in at 45.38 seconds.
In the same recent race, Team USA’s Chris Guiliano, a swimmer from the University of Notre Dame, finished second with a time of 45.22 seconds. Caeleb Dressel, another Olympian, secured third place, finishing at 45.65 seconds.
Alexy’s achievements in 2024 also include his first gold medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle at the Paris Olympics. Subsequently, he set a new American and world championship record with a 45.05-second lead-off time in Hungary. Guiliano was a part of that relay team as well.
This record-breaking performance comes shortly after Russia’s Egor Kornev matched the world record during the World Cup competition in the short-course version of the 100-meter freestyle.
Following his race, Alexy revealed to Swimming World Magazine, “I felt pretty good. The goal was to qualify for the 50 and 100 individually. I was confident after this morning.” He added that racing against a strong U.S. field at a selection meet was nerve-wracking yet beneficial, as it simulates the pressure experienced in global competitions.
Looking ahead, Alexy is aiming to improve his times at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships in Beijing, scheduled for December 1 to 6.
