The name “Jalen” might soon see a significant rise in popularity as a baby name, spurred by Knicks fans and Jalen Brunson’s role in their recent N.B.A. championship victory. Experts suggest that Brunson’s influence on naming could rival that of sports legends like Michael Jordan.
Baby-naming consultants are predicting a potential surge in names such as Jalen (Brunson), Joshua (Hart), Miles (McBride), and Tyler (Kolek). These names are already favored, ranking among the top 1,000 names for boys in the United States. Landry (Shamet) is also gaining traction, based on Social Security Administration data.
Pamela Redmond, from the baby-naming website Nameberry, anticipates growing interest in these names. She attributes this not only to the Knicks’ success but also to the relatable players and the community spirit that was evident during the team’s championship journey. According to her, the unity shown in New York and across the nation resonates strongly in today’s world.
Brunson, who is the team captain and most valuable player of the finals, might set a trend with his name. Redmond remarked that in 2025, nine boys were named Brunson, indicating a budding trend. The NYC Health Department mentioned on social media that since March 1, only five babies in the city were named Jalen, yet a rise is expected. Redmond also noted the possibility of more girls receiving variations of the name, though whimsical forms like “Brunsina” are not anticipated.
