Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has expressed concerns about President Donald Trump’s communication strategies, comparing them to those of her former boss, President Joe Biden. In an article for The New York Times, Jean-Pierre highlighted that Biden’s efforts to communicate his domestic achievements fell short. She noted that while his policies were functioning well, the public perception didn’t match the positive economic reports. People struggled with high costs on essentials such as groceries, rent, child care, and fuel, which dominated public discourse.
Jean-Pierre emphasized the importance of addressing the public’s lived experience when crafting a message. She criticized the outdated models used in Biden’s administration, which led to a disconnect with the public’s daily life. She argued that President Trump is making similar errors, particularly in how he addresses issues like gas prices and inflation.
In response, White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers blamed Biden’s policies for damaging the economy. She claimed that Trump has remedied the situation by implementing significant tax cuts, reducing drug prices, and revitalizing manufacturing.
Jean-Pierre acknowledged mistakes in handling issues like Biden’s age during her tenure. She believed her press briefings intensified debates on this topic. She gave examples of how new media formats, such as TikTok videos illustrating high prices at gas pumps, garner more attention than conventional news coverage.
Jean-Pierre advised Trump’s team to anticipate increased scrutiny in the upcoming years, especially regarding uncomfortable public appearances or discrepancies in health reports. She underlined the difficulty in regaining public trust once it’s lost.
She concluded by discussing her decision to leave the Democratic Party and register as an Independent. Her previous work was deeply intertwined with the party, starting from Obama’s campaign to becoming the first Black and openly queer White House press secretary.
