John Roberts Praises Outgoing Smithsonian Secretary Amid Controversy

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts commended the departing leader of the Smithsonian Institution after facing criticism from the Trump administration. Lonnie Bunch, the Smithsonian Secretary, announced his decision to retire following over a year of discord with the White House regarding the portrayal of U.S. history at the institution.

The Trump administration issued a report in July that criticized the National Museum of American History. As the chancellor of the Smithsonian, Roberts praised Bunch for his departure, stating that Bunch pursued excellence in narrating the nation’s story. Roberts added that the Smithsonian greatly benefited from Bunch’s wisdom, vision, and leadership.

“He pursued excellence in the telling of our nation’s story,” Roberts said. “The Smithsonian had benefited greatly from his wisdom, vision, and leadership.”

Before retiring, Bunch had opposed internal critiques from the White House. The report from July claimed that the Smithsonian was subject to an ideology that didn’t fairly represent America’s history. Bunch countered this claim in an internal email to staff, admitting there was room for improvement but disagreeing with the report’s portrayal of the museum’s work.

“At the Smithsonian, our work is driven by scholarship, accuracy and an uncompromising commitment to tell the fullness of America’s story,” Bunch wrote. “We are charged with helping a nation find understanding, hope and clarity.”

Pressure increased after the administration expressed concerns that the Smithsonian might lose access to federal artifacts and grants if it continued with its current leadership. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley warned that changes were necessary to maintain these privileges.

Burgum and Haley addressed Congress, outlining concerns over ideological influence and potential misconduct within the Smithsonian’s leadership. Their letter mentioned possible violations of federal anti-discrimination laws.

“The administration has recently uncovered evidence that the Smithsonian leadership’s institutional culture may have resulted in significant violations of Federal antidiscrimination law,” the letter noted.
