Joy Reid Discusses Juneteenth and July 4th Celebrations

8 hours ago 0

Far-left journalist Joy Reid recently stated that Juneteenth, rather than July 4th, should be the day to celebrate American freedom. During a discussion with MS NOW analyst Alex Wagner on her YouTube show, Reid shared that she knows few Black individuals who celebrate Independence Day.

Reid explained that while her White acquaintances might enjoy the festivities on the Fourth of July, many Black people use it as a day off rather than a true celebration. She quoted Frederick Douglass, suggesting that the holiday celebrates slaveholders’ independence from the British crown regarding their slave empires.

Reid likened the sentiments around July 4th to how Indigenous peoples feel about Thanksgiving, highlighting a disconnect with the celebration. She emphasized that many Black Americans do not relate to July 4th celebrations, viewing Juneteenth as more symbolic of freedom.

Reid claimed that America only became a democracy after ending slavery and enforcing the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, noting a significant delay until the 1960s. Wagner concurred, pointing out the tardiness in achieving full democratic ideals.

Reid also addressed President Abraham Lincoln’s initial tolerance of slavery and his proposals to relocate Black people. She criticized Lincoln for historical racism, suggesting a mixed response from the Black community toward such ideas.

In discussing patriotism, Reid and Wagner agreed that Juneteenth better represents the ideals of freedom. Wagner distanced current patriotism from Donald Trump, though Reid argued that Trump is an accurate reflection of America’s history, with Barack Obama more aspirational.
