Allegations of Disparaging Remarks: Bessent on Zelensky Before White House Meeting

2 days ago 0

A new book set to detail Donald Trump’s first year in a second term has brought allegations against Scott Bessent, his treasury secretary, regarding comments made about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky before a planned visit to the White House. This book, titled Regime Change, has been crafted by New York Times journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan. Published by Simon & Schuster, the book promises insights gathered from extensive interviews and close examination of inner workings within the administration.

The Contentious Remarks:

Reportedly, Bessent made several contentious remarks regarding Zelensky to others within the administration. Prior to Zelensky’s meeting with Trump, Bessent allegedly described him using derogatory language and likened him to comedic characters, portraying concerns ahead of the White House visit. The meeting took place on February 28, featuring a heated exchange between Trump and Zelensky.

The Outcome of the Visit:

Despite expectations for a formal minerals agreement and a joint press conference demonstrating unity, the meeting swiftly escalated into a confrontation not only involving Trump and Zelensky but also Vice President JD Vance. Criticisms were aimed at Zelensky for his perceived lack of gratitude towards U.S. aid and his wardrobe choice.

This unexpected clash led to the cancellation of the planned press conference, and the anticipated minerals deal was postponed. Nonetheless, a revised agreement came to fruition in April, establishing a joint investment fund linked to future revenues from Ukraine’s mineral development.

Bessent’s Advisements:

Excerpts from the book claim Bessent advised Trump against inviting Zelensky unless concessions over Ukraine’s mineral resources were secured. Prior interactions included a contentious meeting in Kyiv days before, where Bessent and Zelensky allegedly engaged in an intense exchange, with Bessent seeking clarity on Zelensky’s objectives.

Previous Reports and Statements:

Previously, the Financial Times covered the Kyiv meeting’s details, revealing strained interactions. During this time, Trump remarked upon Bessent’s less than cordial reception in Ukraine. In later statements, Bessent shared with Bloomberg his disapproval of Zelensky’s approach during the Oval Office meeting, labeling it a significant diplomatic mistake and expressing shock at the perceived disrespect towards American representatives.
