Kansas City Chiefs Look to Rookie Mansoor Delane to Step Up in Cornerback Role

With NFL teams on their summer break from mid-June to mid-July, fans find themselves in the quietest period of the offseason. However, the excitement will soon resume with only three weeks remaining before training camp starts, leading into the preseason and regular season, beginning in the week of September 7th.

During this downtime, analyses and previews for training camps have been conducted for all 32 teams. A focus has been placed on one rookie from each team who could potentially secure a starting position in training camp. Today, the spotlight is on the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs made a significant move by trading up to the sixth overall pick to draft Mansoor Delane. The team was determined to secure him and avoid losing him to another franchise, indicating their high expectations for the unanimous All-American and first-team All-SEC selection.

Kansas City traded Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, leaving an open competition for the CB1 position. Kristian Fulton, Nohl Williams, and L’Jarius Sneed will contend for the role, but Delane is the frontrunner to win it.

Delane distinguished himself as potentially the top cover corner in college football last season. Allowing a completion rate of just 40% (14 catches on 35 targets), he yielded only 165 yards and zero touchdowns, boasting a 31.3 passer rating in coverage.

His ability to create turnovers is another impressive aspect of his game. Throughout his collegiate career with LSU and Virginia Tech, Delane recorded eight interceptions, four forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

For the Chiefs to make another deep playoff run, strengthening their secondary is vital, given the formidable quarterbacks they will face next season, including Bo Nix, Justin Herbert, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Matthew Stafford, Joe Burrow, Drake Maye, and Brock Purdy.
