Wide receiver development has been a focal point for the Kansas City Chiefs during their training camp in recent weeks. Xavier Worthy missed all of last week due to a right shoulder sprain. Rashee Rice is gradually increasing his practice work after knee surgery during the offseason. Rookie Cyrus Allen has turned heads in camp, forming a strong connection with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Tyquan Thornton has also seen action with the first-team offense.
However, injuries have kept these four receivers–Worthy, Rice, Thornton, and Allen–from participating together. This changed on Monday when all of Mahomes’ key receivers were on the field for practice. Worthy was the only one who didn’t fully engage in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills, yet he might join full practice soon.
With the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, Aug. 15, the return of these receivers is an important step as the team prepares for the regular season.
Patrick Mahomes, who underwent ACL and LCL surgery, has been practicing without restrictions and teammates have praised his performance. His return to form is crucial. Should his top targets remain healthy, the Chiefs could be poised to dominate the AFC again. Tight end Travis Kelce continues to perform at a high level and improvements in the offensive line project a strong season for the offense.
The final practices of the week will be closely monitored. If Worthy achieves full participation, Mahomes would enter the game against the Rams with a complete set of receivers.
