Hegseth, Loeffler Announce Commission to Boost Support for Small Defense Firms

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator Kelly Loeffler have launched the Smaller War Plants Commission to enhance support for small defense contractors. This initiative aims to bolster expertise and funds for these companies.

Hegseth articulated a clear message in a three-minute video published on social media, stating, “President Trump is putting an end to reliance on foreign supply chains and adversaries. This significant long-term commitment will strengthen the industrial base supporting the world’s most powerful military. When we support the businesses supplying our forces, we innovate and outmatch any opponent.” He emphasized that they are converting industrial capabilities into lasting battlefield advantages, deterring conflict and ensuring peace.

The commission is likened to the Smaller War Plants Corporation from 1942, which supported small businesses in producing war materials during World War II through loans, contracts, and technical assistance.

Loeffler highlighted the commission’s goal of boosting funding for businesses involved in supply chain development and expansion. “The era of outsourcing power projection to adversaries is finished,” she stated. Small manufacturers form 70% of the U.S. defense industrial base, and the SBA oversees a $500 billion small business portfolio. With support from President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, the U.S. military will gain asymmetrical advantages backed by a nimble industrial base.

Hegseth also commented on economic pressures on Iran, indicating potential military responses, while also addressing other aspects impacting U.S. defense strategies.
