Keenan Allen Remains with the Colts Post-DUI Arrest

Keenan Allen will continue with the Indianapolis Colts despite a DUI arrest. General Manager Chris Ballard confirmed this decision on Tuesday. Ballard emphasized the human aspect, noting, “Good people make mistakes.” He highlighted Allen’s character, urging others to grant him grace as he navigates legal procedures.

Allen, a wide receiver, had recently joined the Colts as a late addition to their training camp. The move was a strategic choice due to concerns over Alec Pierce’s recovery from a calf and heel issue. Allen signed a one-year contract on August 19. His history with head coach Shane Steichen, from their time together in Los Angeles, played a role in his signing. Former Colts quarterback Philip Rivers also endorsed Allen, reflecting their time as teammates with the Chargers.

Ballard defended Allen’s record by saying, “Fourteen years in the league, no issues.” He stressed Allen’s career achievements and his strong relationships within the sport, including with Rivers and Steichen. Ballard also expressed confidence in Allen’s character after meeting his family.

Allen participated in one preseason game following his signing. Shortly after the game, he was arrested at around 1 a.m. on Sunday in downtown Indianapolis. The arrest occurred when police observed his car parked illegally, noting symptoms of intoxication. He faces misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and with a blood-alcohol level of at least 0.08%.

Allen was processed at the Marion County Arrestee Processing Center and released later that day. The exact bond amount was not disclosed. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will decide on charges, and the NFL is monitoring the situation. Allen might face penalties under the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.

Allen’s first court appearance is slated for September 16, just days after the Colts’ regular-season game against the Baltimore Ravens.
