The San Francisco 49ers maintain an unbeaten record, yet it’s taken a toll on their star player, Mike Evans, who struggles with an Achilles issue.
During the 23-17 victory against the Washington Commanders, wide receiver Mike Evans exited the game late in the first half. Post-game, coach Kyle Shanahan informed the media that Evans is dealing with Achilles tendinitis. This condition had already kept him from practicing leading up to the Week 6 matchup.
“It’s something that’s bothered him before, and something that has bothered him throughout the week,” Shanahan stated. “When you have Achilles tendinitis like he does, it kind of is what it is. It flared up tonight. I hope he recovers throughout the week.”
Despite the setback, Shanahan mentioned that the team views this as a temporary issue, adding he did not anticipate further scans for Evans’ tendon. Though Evans missed practices all week, Shanahan described the decision for him to play as “a pretty close call.” Evans reassured the coach of his ability to handle the issue, having managed it earlier in his NFL career.
“That was the confidence he gave me, but we knew he might not be able to last,” Shanahan acknowledged.
Evans managed 94 yards on three catches but went down after a 16-yard reception with 1:10 left before halftime and did not rejoin the game.
Without Evans, the 49ers’ offense faltered, producing only 72 yards and three points in the second half. They experienced three consecutive three-and-out drives in the fourth quarter. Remaining healthy wide receivers Jordan Watkins, Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing, and Malik Turner collectively managed only two receptions for 35 yards.
Additionally, linebacker Luke Gifford sustained a groin injury, and cornerback Upton Stout suffered a shoulder injury.
Shanahan remains hopeful that Evans will be fit to play against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 7. If Evans cannot participate, Shanahan emphasized the need for other players to step up. Receiver Christian Kirk, having participated in two practices, is “a possibility” for the upcoming game. Shanahan does not foresee fellow wideouts Demarcus Robinson or Deebo Samuel Sr. returning before the 49ers’ Week 8 open date.
