Key Loss for Maryland’s Defense as Season Approaches

Maryland head coach Mike Locksley faces significant challenges this season following the loss of a key defensive player during training camp. According to Pete Nakos of On3, defensive end Zahir Mathis is out for the season after suffering an injury during Wednesday’s practice. Details about the injury remain unclear.

Last year, Mathis had an impressive freshman year with the Maryland Terrapins. Standing at six-foot-six and weighing 220 pounds, he recorded 22 tackles, six sacks, and 8.5 tackles for loss. His six sacks ranked just behind Sidney Stewart, who led the team with seven sacks in his freshman campaign.

Maryland prioritized retaining Mathis in the offseason due to questions surrounding Locksley’s future. In his eight seasons with the program, Locksley has a 37-49 record. The Terrapins finished 4-8 in their last two seasons, securing only two wins in the Big Ten each year.

Jim Smith, Maryland’s athletic director, expressed the university’s commitment to enhancing roster retention and recruitment. “We are working to strengthen our NIL support for 2026 and beyond and have already seen success for next year,” Smith shared. “We are prioritizing roster retention, recruiting, and competing in the transfer portal… We are optimistic about the young talent in our program and where we are in recruiting.”

With Mathis sidelined, the team’s defensive line will rely heavily on Stewart for a standout sophomore season. Sophomore defensive end Nahsir Taylor and redshirt sophomore DD Holmes will also be crucial in pressuring opponents.

Maryland starts its season at home against Hampton on September 5. The Terrapins will then continue their non-conference schedule by visiting UConn on September 12 and hosting Virginia Tech on September 19.
