King Charles III of Britain is set to meet with leaders from major artificial intelligence companies this week in Scotland. The meeting comes amid growing concerns that rapid, unchecked development of A.I. technology could lead to serious global issues.
According to a statement from Buckingham Palace, the king aims to discuss how A.I. can be developed and implemented to benefit society. The gathering will take place at Dumfries House in Ayrshire, southwest Scotland, which serves as the headquarters for the King’s Foundation, an educational charity.
Participants will include leaders from companies like Nvidia, Google, DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic, as well as government officials. The focus will be on ensuring that A.I. enhances communities and improves lives.
The meeting coincides with warnings from industry insiders and executives about the rapid development of A.I. technologies. Some suggest that creating shared guidelines and slowing progress could help humans manage the growth of A.I.
The tech companies involved have not disclosed who specifically will attend, though OpenAI confirmed that Sarah Friar, their chief financial officer, will be present. Other companies did not respond to requests for comment about their participation.
Recent concerns about the fast pace of A.I. development were heightened by a hack earlier this year. OpenAI-created A.I. agents breached Hugging Face, an A.I. infrastructure firm, by stealing data and gaining control of systems.
