A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale shook Kumamoto, located on Kyushu, Japan’s southern main island. The tremor, occurring late Tuesday afternoon, resulted in significant damage and injuries.
A collapse at Aeon Mall in Kashima Town trapped several individuals. Rescue operations are underway, though details are sparse, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. Kyodo News reported an explosion before the collapse at the mall.
The Japan Meteorological Agency initially issued a tsunami advisory for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas but lifted it within two hours. The U.S. Geological Survey revised the earthquake’s magnitude to 6.8. The affected area lies approximately 900 kilometers southwest of Tokyo.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the nation, stating that a government task force is gathering information and assessing damage. Reports indicate injuries, damage to infrastructure, blackouts, and fires. Takaichi advised caution concerning fire and sharp debris.
Kyodo News Agency reported that a Yatsushiro city hospital received around 40 injured individuals. A train derailment occurred at Yatsushiro station, and Kumamoto Castle experienced damage. In Mashiki town, stone lanterns fell at a Shinto shrine.
Officials have found no major damage to public facilities, yet assessments continue. Emergency services have responded to numerous calls about fires and property damage. Takaichi emphasized the priority of public safety, urging vigilance against aftershocks.
The Japan Meteorological Agency’s Shinji Kiyomoto noted ongoing seismic activity, advising heightened caution over the coming days. No tsunami threats were observed.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed that nearby nuclear plants remained safe. Rail services including Shinkansen bullet trains are suspended for safety checks, and Aso Kumamoto Airport’s operations are halted.
The Defense Ministry dispatched aircraft to survey the damage. Historically, Kumamoto suffered a deadly earthquake in 2016, resulting in over 50 fatalities and mass property destruction.
