LAPD Releases Body Cam Footage of Dog Shooting Incident

Los Angeles police released body camera footage showing an officer fatally shooting a woman’s pet dog, sparking public outrage and inquiries. The incident occurred when police responded to a report of a woman screaming in her apartment on Jordan Avenue. The footage captures the moments before and after the shooting of Jameson, a 2-year-old Saint Bernard doodle.

The video footage, taken from two body cameras, shows officers approaching Marie Marseille’s apartment. They encountered her large barking dog, and one officer drew his gun, though he put it away after Marseille closed the door. Marseille told officers that the dog was not aggressive. As Jameson came out of the apartment and approached the officers, one officer fired and hit the dog.

The incident has brought significant attention, with widespread criticism directed at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Police Chief Jim McDonnell announced a full investigation into the matter. Mayor Karen Bass and other officials have commented on the pet’s death, calling it a tragedy. Following the release of the footage, Marseille and her family hired lawyers who condemned the officer’s actions as unnecessary and dangerous.

Compounding the tragic event, the neighbor who called police expressed regret, stating that she did not anticipate the situation escalating to this point. Her call was initially due to concerns for Marseille’s well-being.

The case has highlighted the need for discussions about use-of-force protocols, especially concerning encounters with animals. Currently, California doesn’t mandate training for handling canine encounters, unlike some other states. Despite existing LAPD directives regarding dog encounters, which recommend several non-lethal options, lethal force was used in this case.

Historically, the LAPD has been involved in numerous incidents involving police shootings of dogs. Data from a 2005 investigation showed a considerable number of such shootings. However, recent statistics show a decrease in such incidents. In the past year, only one animal was reported to have been shot, indicating tighter restrictions might be in place.
