Consuming leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale, and broccoli has been associated with improved lung health, according to recent scientific findings. These vegetables are rich in vitamin K1, a nutrient playing a crucial role in blood clotting. Furthermore, vitamin K2, found in fermented foods, certain dairy products, eggs, and meats, aids in calcium regulation and supports bone health.
Vitamin K and Respiratory Health
Researchers at Edith Cowan University in Australia explored the connection between dietary intake of vitamins K1 and K2 with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and lung function. They discovered that increasing vitamin K1 intake could lead to better lung function and a lower prevalence of COPD.
“Chronic respiratory diseases, including COPD and asthma, are among the most common noncommunicable diseases worldwide. In 2019, they were the third leading cause of death, accounting for 4 million deaths and affecting 454.6 million individuals globally,” the study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition stated.
The research emphasized the importance of effective prevention strategies since current treatments for asthma and COPD cannot cure these conditions. Smoking remains the primary cause of COPD, but exposure to irritants like dust, chemicals, and pollution can also trigger it.
Study Findings
The study analyzed data from 179,062 participants over 10.5 years, concluding a higher vitamin K1 intake correlated with better lung function and a reduced rate of COPD. Participants consuming the most vitamin K1 showed a 16% lower likelihood of developing COPD. The benefits were more evident in smokers and individuals in high-risk occupations. Interestingly, vitamin K2 intake did not influence COPD rates and neither vitamin seemed to affect asthma.
Associate Professor Marc Sim, involved in the study, suggested vitamin K might activate a protein that helps maintain lung tissue flexibility and prevents damage. Though the research was observational and cannot definitively prove vitamin K1 directly reduces COPD risk, it highlights the association between higher vitamin K1 intake and enhanced lung health.
Increasing Vitamin K1 Intake
Chengfeng Li, one of the study’s researchers, noted that adding an extra serving of leafy greens to your diet is a feasible way to boost your vitamin K1 intake. Foods like collard greens, Swiss chard, Brussels sprouts, and turnip greens are rich in vitamin K1, offering more options for dietary enhancement.
