During a family beach trip, Abel’s passion for the Sixers led him to etch the jersey into his skin using his nephew’s blue zinc sunscreen stick. With the help of his sister, the words “James” and “23” were written on his back. Abel chose to apply sunscreen only to those areas, leaving the rest of his skin unprotected.

Abel explained his unusual thought process, saying, “I was just like, ‘How can I get a LeBron James jersey as fast as possible?’ And for some reason, that’s where my mind went.” The result was a sunburn creating a semi-permanent LeBron James “jersey” on his back.

The weather that day was slightly cloudy with temperatures in the high 70s, making it ideal for sunburns despite common misconceptions about sun exposure on cloudy days.

Photos of Abel’s sunburn quickly spread online. Despite the physical discomfort and his family’s embarrassment, Abel is proud of his act, stating, “It does hurt, but I did it, right? I’m going to have to keep it. I don’t really want it to fade as fast.” He hopes this gesture reflects the Philly toughness that LeBron himself will experience with the 76ers.
