Lincoln-Way East Celebrates Jack Murphy’s Return

12 minutes ago 0

Lincoln-Way East welcomes the return of junior receiver Jack Murphy. This fast athlete had been slowed by a hamstring injury but has gradually rejoined the Griffins’ lineup. ‘I was out longer to ensure I could finish the regular season,’ Murphy noted, adding, ‘And the playoffs.’

In his third game back, Murphy excelled. He caught eight passes for 186 yards and scored two touchdowns—all in the first half. This led Lincoln-Way East to a 42-0 victory over district rival Lincoln Way Central in the SouthWest Suburban Conference. This marked the first football meeting between the two schools since spring 2021.

Evan LeFevour threw for 240 yards, while backup Tyler Spychalski launched a 61-yard pass to Luke Ingram in the fourth quarter for the Griffins, currently 7-0 and 5-0 in the conference. Running back Aidan Cavanaugh added 51 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. The defense also shined, with Ontario Pryor intercepting a pass and Jacob Onik and Cameren Stewart delivering key sacks. Murphy impressed with touchdown catches of 66 and 44 yards.

He’s great,

said LeFevour about Murphy, emphasizing his skills in gaining yards after the catch. Senior offensive lineman Mason Halliman called Murphy the best in the state.

Lincoln-Way Central’s quarterback, Gavin Ciesiun, passed for 103 yards. Justin Langford recovered a muffed punt, Nicholas Paczesny added a fumble recovery, and Alex Harper made an interception. Before Friday, Murphy had only four receptions for 51 yards due to prior injury.

Murphy’s speed complements fellow receiver Jayden Cawthon, providing the team with dynamic options. Coach Rob Zvonar praised Murphy’s sprinting ability, even noting his state-qualification in track.

Murphy credits his early speed training to his father, Mike, who introduced him to speed programs in sixth grade. Although Murphy shines in delivering rapid plays, he acknowledges the robust offensive line as essential support.

Lincoln-Way East had close wins against Brother Rice and Kankakee to start the season, before dominating the following five opponents by a 122-31 margin. The team aims to secure their first Class 8A title since 2019—a season Murphy distinctly recalls.

Reflecting on his journey, Murphy recalls watching AJ Henning, a Lincoln-Way East alumnus now with the Miami Dolphins, as an inspiration.

It’s been my life,

Murphy expressed, valuing the balance and peace football brings him.
