Liverpool Parts Ways with Coach Arne Slot After Disappointing Season

3 weeks ago 0

Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, informed Arne Slot on Saturday morning that his tenure as head coach was over. This decision ends Slot’s two-year reign at the club. Despite winning the Premier League title in his first season, Slot’s second season saw Liverpool finishing fifth, trailing behind the leaders.

Liverpool managed to secure Champions League qualification, but their total of 60 points was the lowest in a decade. Initially, Hughes and Fenway Sports Group CEO of football, Michael Edwards, planned to support Slot due to mitigating factors affecting the team’s performance. Nevertheless, after reviewing the situation post-season, they decided a change was necessary given the atmosphere in the dressing room and among fans.

Former Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola is the leading candidate to replace Slot as Liverpool seeks a swift transition. The decision to part ways with Slot followed consultations with various sources who provided insights into the situation. Interestingly, Slot remained involved in pre-season and recruitment discussions, unaware of the impending change.

Slot hoped to bring Etienne Reijnen, his former assistant from Feyenoord, to Liverpool. However, their plans were disrupted, and Reijnen had not signed any contract. Speculation grew when Slot did not participate in the season-end lap of appreciation, instead staying in the dugout, claiming he wanted to focus attention on departing players Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.

Despite communicating with players about future plans, Slot’s hopes were dashed on Saturday morning. In an open letter in the Liverpool Echo, he expressed pride in his contributions during his first season and reflected on losing Diogo Jota in a car accident. He highlighted the importance of Champions League qualification for maintaining Liverpool’s competitive edge and expressed confidence in the future and legacy left behind.

Slot’s departure will cost Liverpool an estimated £7 million in compensation for the final year of his contract. Other departures are likely, including assistants Sipke Hulshoff, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, and physical performance coach Ruben Peeters. Senior figures had remained supportive of Slot, attributing the challenges to Jota’s death and significant injuries to key players such as Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

Slot faced criticism for failing to address the team’s weaknesses and a lackluster style of play that left fans unsatisfied. Despite a brief resurgence, Liverpool faltered, missing out on crucial points. The team ended with their worst defensive record in 38 league games, and their attack also fell short.

The club’s leadership deemed a new direction essential, emphasizing a more aggressive and urgent playing style. Keeping Slot risked a toxic atmosphere if the next season started poorly. They viewed a summer change as necessary to ensure the right successor. Hughes and Edwards, with approval from the FSG board, including John W. Henry, Tom Werner, and Mike Gordon, concluded Slot’s tenure.

Following Saturday’s announcement, team captain Virgil van Dijk and others expressed gratitude to Slot on social media. Despite behind-the-scenes tensions and disruptions, senior players insisted Slot maintained some support within the squad. Most of them learned of Slot’s sacking just hours before the Champions League final kickoff.

Andoni Iraola, who achieved notable success with Bournemouth, emerges as a strong candidate for Liverpool. His style aligns with Liverpool’s planned tactical evolution. Hughes’ familiarity with Iraola, having appointed him at Bournemouth, supports this choice. Although other coaches like Sebastian Hoeness and Pierre Sage are admired, Iraola’s availability and track record make him an attractive option.

While Luis Enrique remains unlikely due to his commitments with PSG, Iraola’s discussions with other clubs suggest Liverpool’s interest could sway him towards taking on the challenge at Anfield. Formal negotiations are expected shortly, increasing the likelihood of Iraola’s appointment.
