Luxury Development in Albania Sparks Local Protests

3 days ago 0

In Tirana, Albania’s capital, public protests have emerged against a luxury tourist site development. The project, financed by Jared Kushner and Gulf investors, has an estimated cost of over $4 billion. Concerns have risen over the use of violent security guards at the proposed site.

For many on the American political left, this situation symbolizes Albanians resisting perceived corruption linked to the Trump family and wealthy investors. Conversely, some on the political right view the protests as opposition to alleged plans associated with Israel.

Nonetheless, Albanians participating in the demonstrations have different priorities. According to Elis Kodra, a 33-year-old protestor, the issues are deeply rooted in local politics. He pointed out that the country has faced persistent governance challenges since the end of Communism 35 years ago. Leaders continue cycling through offices, prioritizing business interests over citizens’ needs.

The protests, which started over three weeks ago, see people gathering outside the prime minister’s office. Albanians express frustration over unresponsive leadership, economic hardships, and the lack of opportunities. Flamingo cutouts have become an emblem of their protest as demonstrators demand change.
