Mamdani Discusses Democratic Socialism’s Impact and Victory in New York Primaries

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared his views on democratic socialism’s potential nationwide, following a successful endorsement of several candidates in the New York Democratic primaries. Speaking with Jonathan Karl on ABC News’ “This Week,” Mamdani argued that democratic socialism can thrive in any political position throughout the country.

Mamdani, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, addressed questions about the feasibility of a democratic socialist becoming President. His statements were backed by the victories of candidates Brad Lander, Claire Valez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier, who won Democratic congressional primaries in New York.

He highlighted a growing desire among Americans for a political approach that prioritizes working-class people. Mamdani emphasized that this sentiment transcends New York, resonating with citizens nationwide seeking change.

Jonathan Karl also questioned Mamdani about Chevalier, who attracted attention for previous comments promoting the abolition of prisons, borders, and police. Despite disagreements on policy, Mamdani upheld a focus on advocating for working individuals.

Regarding safety, Mamdani affirmed the existence of prisons while upholding that public safety remains a non-negotiable issue. In reference to Chevalier and others he supports, Mamdani maintained that Democrats need a broader, substantive platform beyond opposing Trump.

He portrayed democratic socialism as pragmatic governance, pointing to accomplishments achieved under his administration, including childcare, tenant rights, infrastructure, and crime reduction. Mamdani cited recent statistics from the NYPD showing historically low murder rates and shooting incidents.

A faction of moderate Democrats issued a “Promise to America” pledge emphasizing capitalism over socialism. The pledge supports secure borders, safe communities, fiscal responsibility, and compromise over extremism. Mamdani dismissed these concerns during the interview.

Further, Mamdani addressed Karl’s inquiries on Israel, expressing support for the nation as a state with equal rights and refraining from endorsing a religiously tilted model.
