Marsha Blackburn Wins Republican Nomination for Tennessee Governor

Senator Marsha Blackburn has won the Republican nomination for the Tennessee governor race. NBC News reports that Blackburn, a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, defeated Representative John Rose. Notably, Trump chose not to endorse any candidate in this race.

Blackburn, aged 74, previously made history as the first woman to represent Tennessee in the U.S. Senate, securing her seat in 2018. Before that, she served in the House of Representatives since 2003. If victorious in the upcoming general election, she will become Tennessee’s first female governor. Her opponent in the general election is Jerri Green, a current Memphis City Council member who secured the Democratic nomination.

Known for her conservative positions, Blackburn has been vocal about her views on abortion and transgender rights. She also frequently criticizes China’s influence. Even though Trump abstained from endorsing her, both Blackburn and Rose invoked his name during the campaign.

The Tennessee Freedom Fund, a group supporting Blackburn, heavily funded efforts to associate her with Trump. They aired ads featuring Trump praising Blackburn, calling her “an incredible person” and acknowledging her accomplishments. Trump expressed during a rally in Washington that he regretted Blackburn’s gubernatorial bid, stating, “I begged her: ‘Marsha, don’t. We don’t want to lose you in the Senate.'” Despite these statements, the Nashville Banner reported Trump informed Tennessee’s congressional delegation on Air Force One that he would not endorse Blackburn due to his established relationship with Rose.

Representative John Rose, who serves Tennessee’s 6th District, previously held the position of state agriculture commissioner. Like Blackburn, he positioned himself as a Trump supporter. Notably, Rose utilized $13 million of his own funds for his gubernatorial campaign.

This race is unusual because Trump typically endorses candidates, sometimes offering support to multiple individuals in the same contest. An example includes his double endorsement during the South Carolina race, where he supported both state Attorney General Alan Wilson and Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette.

Blackburn joins a notable group of senators who sought gubernatorial roles in the current election cycle. Senator Tommy Tuberville also won the Republican nomination for governor in Alabama. Conversely, Democratic Senator Michael Bennet lost his primary in Colorado, and Senator Amy Klobuchar will vie for the governorship in Minnesota soon.
