The Okanogan County coroner’s office has released the official cause of death for Matt Brown. Brown died by suicide, with ‘subsequent immersion in water’ and ‘under the influence of methamphetamine’ cited as contributing factors. He was 42 years old.
On Saturday, his brother Bear Brown announced on social media that Matt had been found dead after authorities recovered a body from a river in Washington state.
‘They found a body in the river a few hours ago, and it was positively identified as being Matt,’ Bear stated in a TikTok video. He added that their brother Noah confirmed the identity of Matt’s body.
Matt Brown struggled with addiction for years. Bear expressed disbelief at Matt’s actions, noting his concerns about Matt possibly overdosing but not harming himself.
Matt, who appeared on ‘Alaskan Bush People’ from 2014 to 2019, died at the age of 42.
The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office responded after receiving a 911 call reporting a man sitting in a shallow river section. Witnesses heard a sound and saw the man face down in the water, swept away by the current. A firearm was reportedly retrieved from the area.
On Sunday, the Brown family released a statement regarding Matt’s death. They expressed their heartbreak and shared memories of Matt as an intelligent and creative individual, passionate about nature and helping others. He was also a talented outdoorsman, fisherman, and artist who encouraged those facing addiction and mental health challenges.
‘Matt was known as one of the original stars of Alaskan Bush People. To us, he was much more,’ the statement read. It highlighted Matt’s compassionate nature and his efforts to support others struggling with similar battles.
Matt battled serious mental health issues and addiction for years, stepping away from the show due to his struggles. Despite challenges, his family, including his late father Billy Brown, believed in Matt’s potential for recovery and peaceful healing.
