Mediterranean Diet Boosts Mental Well-Being During Pandemic

3 weeks ago 0

Consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and olive oil can help maintain mental strength into old age, according to recent research. Older adults in England who embraced a Mediterranean diet reported better psychological health compared to peers who did not. This study took place during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and involved over 3,000 adults aged 50 to 90, examining how their eating habits influenced their long-term outlook on life.

Participants completed surveys that assessed psychological traits such as autonomy, life satisfaction, purpose, and control over daily routines. Each participant received a score based on their adherence to Mediterranean diet principles. The results showed a significant improvement in well-being, independent of caloric intake, pointing to the specific foods consumed.

Adjustments for income, education, physical activity, smoking, and general health didn’t alter the results. Those who adhered closely to the Mediterranean diet experienced a milder decline in emotional well-being during lockdowns, as published in the journal BMJ Open. The diet includes anti-inflammatory foods, like polyphenols in extra virgin olive oil, which help reduce brain inflammation and support mood-regulating hormone production.

Kim Kulp, a registered dietitian nutritionist, affirmed these findings, highlighting the diet’s ability to provide nutrients and compounds that lower inflammation and support gut health. With a variety of plant-based foods, it increases body and brain nutrients, reducing inflammation and improving well-being.

Researchers acknowledged limitations, such as reliance on self-reported dietary information, which may have inaccuracies. Also, the sample mainly involved healthier and wealthier individuals, which might not reflect diverse populations. The two days of dietary data and limited psychological testing understates its comprehensive impact. As an observational study, it couldn’t confirm a direct causation between the diet and mental health improvements.

Overall, a diet abundant in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes offers essential nutrition, reducing stress and depression while enhancing well-being even during challenging times.
